Applications open for 2020 IFAJ-Alltech Young Leaders in Agricultural Journalism Award

The International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ) has opened the application process for the 2020 IFAJ-Alltech Young Leaders in Agricultural Journalism Award. Each of IFAJ’s 53-member guilds may submit one nominee for the prestigious award, which recognises outstanding young journalists who demonstrate great potential to become leaders in the agricultural journalism industry.

 

Ten young journalists - age 35 or younger by December 31, 2019 - are selected by an international jury for the prize, which includes a travel stipend to attend the 2020 IFAJ Congress June 24-28 in Vingsted, Denmark. The Young Leaders will participate in a boot camp in the days prior to congress, which includes farm visits, professional development and networking workshops the Vingsted area.

 

“The importance of strong journalism in communicating the truth of agriculture cannot be overstated,” said Dr. Mark Lyons, president and CEO of Alltech. “At Alltech, we believe in nurturing talent, and we are proud to support the next generation of journalists who are passionate about sharing the real stories of those who work tirelessly to feed a Planet of Plenty.”

 

IFAJ president Owen Roberts added, “The young leaders' program has proven to be a difference maker for IFAJ. Many of our member guilds are now led by former program participants, who immersed themselves in the boot camp experience then took their enthusiasm and energy for agricultural journalism leadership back to their home countries. Alltech's partnership and vision for this program has unquestionably made a difference in the vitality of our member guilds and in the future of IFAJ itself.”

 

The application is available online and must be completed by February 7, 2020. Those applications will be forwarded to each applicant’s guild; each guild will select its nominee and submit their application by February 21, 2020. Applications must include three samples of work. Nominees must be willing to attend the 2020 IFAJ Congress and Young Leaders boot camp, which will be conducted in English.

 

The IFAJ-Alltech Young Leaders Award in Agricultural Journalism was established in 2006 in partnership with the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists and Alltech to recognise future leaders in agricultural journalism and communications from around the world. Alltech e AgriBriefing colaboram em pesquisa que abrange toda a indústria sobre mulheres na agricultura

Os desafios associados à crescente população global tornaram mais importante do que nunca que a indústria agro-alimentar seja capaz de desempenhar todo o seu potencial. Inclusão e diversidade no ambiente de trabalho são essenciais para moldar um futuro sustentável - entretanto, de acordo com a Organização das Nações Unidas para a Alimentação e a Agricultura, ainda há grande disparidade de gênero no setor da indústria de alimentos.

Em conjunto, a Alltech e a AgriBriefing iniciaram a pesquisa “mulheres na indústria agroalimentar”, a fim de coletar dados que indiquem as perspectivas do mundo real no cenário profissional para mulheres no agronegócio.

O objetivo da iniciativa é apresentar o atual estado da indústria. Não se trata de dar tratamento especial às mulheres ou vantagens injustas, apenas garantir que a indústria possua os fatos e habilidades para criar uma base igual para todos.

Conduzida em outubro de 2019, a pesquisa coletou as opiniões e os resultados de mais de 2500 empregados que trabalham no agronegócio ao redor do mundo. Os resultados foram revisados por jornalistas do AgriBriefing, com dados adicionais independentes advindos de consultores de marketing da empresa Savanta ComRes.

O relatório aponta as diferenças entre opiniões masculinas e femininas, como mulheres percebem seus empregadores, culturas no ambiente de trabalho e quais são as barreiras enfrentadas pelas mulheres no setor.

Participantes foram questionados sobre as maiores barreiras que enfrentam ao tentar progredir em sua carreira no setor agroalimentar.

Sobre igualdade salarial, mais da metade das mulheres concordam que é um problema a ser tratado, comparado a um terço dos homens. Mulheres que trabalham no meio agritech citaram mais vezes que a falta de mentores no ramo configura uma barreira ao progresso, em comparação com mulheres que trabalham na parte comercial.

Mark Lyons, CEO da Alltech disse:

"Nós precisamos criar um ambiente que incentive conversas; onde mentoras possam ser seguidas e programas estabelecidos dentro de nossas organizações para facilitar a mentoria."

Para a maior parte, entretanto, a pesquisa mostra que a indústria já está realizando grande progresso e que os empregados estão positivos quanto ao futuro, já que 58% das respostas mostraram que as mulheres estão bem representadas na indústria e que 79% concordam que as empresas em que trabalham estão se tornando mais inclusivas.

Alltech y AgriBriefing presentan los resultados de una encuesta global de la industria sobre las mujeres en la agricultura

[LEXINGTON, Kentucky] Los desafíos relacionados con la creciente población mundial han hecho que sea más importante que nunca que la industria agroalimentaria pueda desarrollar su máximo potencial. La inclusión y la diversidad en la fuerza laboral son así esenciales para forjar un futuro sostenible. Sin embargo, según la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura, la brecha de género en las industrias alimentaria y agrícola es grande.

De esta manera, Alltech y AgriBriefing realizaron conjuntamente la encuesta Mujeres en la Alimentación y la Agricultura para recopilar información real del panorama profesional de las mujeres en el sector.

El objetivo de la iniciativa fue evidenciar el estado actual de nuestra industria. No para dar a las mujeres un trato especial o un beneficio injusto, sino para promover las circunstancias y las capacidades requeridas para establecer condiciones equitativas.

Desarrollados en octubre de 2019, los resultados catalogan las opiniones y experiencias de más de 2,500 trabajadores del sector agroalimentario de todo el mundo. Estos resultados fueron revisados por los propios periodistas de AgriBriefing, con el análisis de datos adicionales realizado por la consultora de investigación de mercado independiente Savanta ComRes.

El informe muestra las diferencias de opiniones entre hombres y mujeres, cómo las mujeres perciben a sus jefes, la cultura en el lugar de trabajo y lo que nuestra industria cree que son las barreras que obstaculizan a las mujeres.

Se les pidió a las participantes que seleccionaran algunas de las mayores barreras que enfrentaron mientras desarrollaban su carrera en el sector de la alimentación y la agricultura.

Sobre la igualdad de remuneración, más de la mitad de todas las mujeres estuvieron de acuerdo de que la igualdad salarial es un problema, en comparación con un tercio de los hombres. Las mujeres que trabajan con tecnología agrícola mencionaron la ausencia de mentoras como una barrera muy frecuente para avanzar, mientas que las que trabajan en el comercio estuvieron de acuerdo con ello en menor medida.

Mark Lyons, Presidente y CEO de Alltech, señaló: “Necesitamos crear espacios para propiciar diálogos, en los que se puedan buscar mentoras y establecer programas dentro de nuestras organizaciones que promuevan esta tutoría”.

Sin embargo, en su mayor parte, la encuesta muestra que la industria está teniendo grandes avances y que sus trabajadores se sienten optimistas sobre el futuro: un 58% de los encuestados siente que las mujeres están bien representadas en la industria, mientras que un 79% reconoce que su organización está siendo cada vez más inclusiva.

Fernando Kubitza

Fernando Kubitza é Engenheiro Agrônomo formado na ESALQ-USP em 1987, Mestre em Nutrição Animal pela mesma instituição em 1990 e Doutor em Aquicultura pela Auburn University, Alabama, Estados Unidos, em 1995.

Foi professor junto ao Departamento de Zootecnia da ESALQ-USP entre 1988 e 1991 e pesquisador recém-doutor neste mesmo departamento entre 1995 e 1997.

Considerado um dos principais nutricionistas de peixes do país, tem atuado como consultor junto a diversas empresas fabricantes de rações para peixes, com trabalho destacado na elaboração das primeiras linhas completas de ração para a criação de peixes carnívoros e para os cultivos intensivos de tilápia no Brasil.
