KEENAN gets nod of approval from customers

A large crowd, mainly of existing customers, travelled to the Keenan Alltech open day in Carlow to see what was on offer. The Keenan Altech open day in Borris, Co Carlow, had a wide range of focal points for attendees on Wednesday. The large crowd consisted mainly of current customers of the Keenan and Alltech brands. However, there were also some smaller agri-companies in attendance for the first time, showcasing their brands and products, including Grasstec, Moocall, Actus, Herdwatch and Samco.

Matthew Halpin attended the beef seminar at the recent Keenan Alltech open day, where finishing cattle were high on the agenda. Some of the highlights of the recent Keenan Alltech Open day in Borris, Co Carlow, were the dairy and beef seminars that ran every hour throughout the afternoon.

The beef seminar was centred on the topic of finishing cattle better, younger and faster. Animal nutritionist Gerry Giggins, along with Alltech beef nutritionist Richard Dudgeon, outlined the key components for finishing cattle correctly.

IFCN Dairy Conference: ‘Milk production will increase 50% per farm by 2030’

Between now and 2030 worldwide demand growth for milk and milk products will be three times the level of current US milk production. A key topic for discussion is the future role of new technologies in milk production. The most significant developments that are expected in the future are in the area of biotechnology and big data.

Robert Walker from Alltech observed: “New technologies will come from the capacity to collect more data.

Keenan and Britains have teamed up to introduce a Keenan MechFiber365 die-cast replica model mixer wagon.

A Keenan of a different sort is coming on the market in March – the MechFiber365 die-cast replica model mixer wagon. The 1:32 model is a replica of the wagon designed to prepare complex nutritious feeds, blending straw, pulps, cereal, grass and maize silage into a rich feed.

Embracing the farm technology revolution

Farmers recognise the need for new farm technology and are embracing it, but understanding the monetisation of it is another story. Dairy Global looked at the Keenan diet feeders and how they can help farmers optimise their nutritional approach.

Robert Walker, who was appointed chief executive officer of Keenan in 2016, is positive smart technology will play a vital role in future farming. Keenan is introducing its own fresh technology to optimise its InTouch feeding system, something the company hopes will revolutionise feeding efficiencies around the world.

Forage focus: Precision feeding of dairy cows at Lyons Research Farm

The autumn-calving dairy herd on UCD’s Lyons Research Farm is currently being fed a mix of maize and grass silage; beet pulp; and soya. Farm manager Eddie Jordan has been asked: ‘Is the operator of the Keenan feeder filling it with a spoon?’

Noel Cullen is filling the feeder within an accuracy of 0.37% and has made it down to as low as 0.1%. It’s all part of a day’s work on the research farm, where a huge focus is put on forage quality. From diet formulation to weekly dry matter measurements, everything is about quality.

The finishing line - How the Kepak feedlot is finishing 3,500 cattle per annum

The figures for finishing beef at the Kepak farm in Co Meath are certainly impressive. Situated less than 15 minutes from the Kepak factory in Clonee, Co Meath, the farm was first purchased in the early 1980s by group founder Noel Keating. Today, the farm extends to 320 hectares and has a capacity to hold 1,800 head of beef cattle at any one time. Animals are fed a fresh mix once per day using a Keenan feeder which has the InTouch system.
