Measure grass quantity and quality to get most from summer grazing

Submitted by aeadmin on Wed, 02/27/2019 - 12:09

Dairy producers are being encouraged to measure and monitor grass quality and quantity to improve the accuracy of nutritional management of cows at grass. “An unprecedented winter followed by a late spring has put the industry under extreme pressure, with fodder shortages and delayed turnout being a widespread issue,” says Tom Chanter, a feed specialist with InTouch. “Producers are therefore looking to capitalise on the grazing now available in an attempt to improve margins and offset some of the additional costs incurred over the winter period.”

Getting more from that TMR

Submitted by aeadmin on Wed, 02/27/2019 - 12:02

Total mixed rations (TMR) have long been known to increase overall performance. Add to that a cloud communication platform which monitors exact inclusion rates of ingredients in the feed wagon, number of rotations and a team of nutritionists, and further improvements in animal health and productivity are possible. That is exactly what farmers using the Keenan and Alltech InTouch technologies at farm level have discovered both in this country and further afield.

Submitted by aeadmin on Wed, 02/27/2019 - 11:59

An extra 23,000 hectares of catch crops is the aim of the €100-155 per hectare incentive for tillage farmers announced last week by the government. Agriculture Minister Michael Creed said the €2.75m measure will support tillage farmers to supply into the strong market for fodder.

It offers €155 per hectare for a temporary crop of short rotation grass for fodder production, and €100 per hectare for catch crops such as fodder rape, turnips.

Giant self-propelled KEENAN feeder lands in Co. Donegal

Submitted by aeadmin on Wed, 02/27/2019 - 11:56

Following on from the launch of the 16m³ Keenan MechFiber 345SP in early 2017, the company has recently brought a 20m³ version to the market.

The new, larger machine carries the MechFiber 365SP designation (SP denotes that it is a self-propelled unit). According to Keenan, the 16m³ machine “delivered impressive results on farms globally”. However, the company says that there was “a noticeable demand for a higher-capacity machine, especially amongst larger dairy herds and specialised beef-finishing units”.

KEENAN launches mixer wagon rental scheme

Submitted by aeadmin on Wed, 02/27/2019 - 11:55

Summer 2018 has proved very challenging for Irish farmers. Unpredicted drought conditions have resulted in extreme difficulties for farmers feeding their livestock, and many have been forced to incorporate a range of different forages and concentrates into their animal’s diets. In response to this, KEENAN is giving farmers who do not own or have access to a mixer wagon the opportunity to rent a KEENAN machine, to help deal with the difficulties in feeding their livestock. The rentals are from a stock of recent KEENAN trade-in machines.
