In the current economic climate, it is understandable that companies in the animal nutrition sector can be risk-averse or reticent to place long-term bets. But at the same time, it is important to create a working environment where risk-taking is tolerated to help create innovative solutions and fostering a culture of curiosity is highly encouraged.

COVID-19 has shocked the world, causing a tragic number of deaths. The fear factor of the crisis and the economic downturn is at the heart of our lives, and the world is suffering.

Before we know it, these same characteristics may very well be those of another global crisis: climate change.

When we consider the future of food and feeding the population, we also must consider the fact that we will have to produce more food in the next 30 years than we produced in the history of mankind.

When we read about the future of food, we see the positives and we see the challenges, the opportunities and some downright scary aspects, such as not having enough calories – not having enough food. And when we look at our feedstuffs and look at how much we lose in terms of nutrients and calories when we’re feeding our animals, it’s an enormous opportunity.

From a business perspective, this new reality presented by the worldwide COVID-19 crisis is profoundly changing not only how organisations do business, but also how business leaders lead in the face of an environment called VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity).

Since 2018, African Swine Fever (ASF) has been responsible for the destruction of hundreds of millions of farmed pigs in China, slashing global stocks by half and increasing Chinese pork imports to record levels. Chinese pork prices doubled in autumn 2019 and continued their rapid rise into spring 2020.

As may be expected in a COVID-19 market context and global economic slowdown, merger and acquisition (M&A) activity in the global animal nutrition sector in 2020 was slower than in previous years.

2020 will be characterised as a year wherein animal nutrition players, though proven to be robust, had to monitor the evolution of COVID-19 and the ramifications of the pandemic on markets.

The laying industry faces unique challenges due to Covid-19. Prices are volatile, yet consumer demand is high. Producers must work hard to produce the best possible eggs, while also finding alternative ways to improve margins in these challenging times.

At the 35^th edition of the renowned Alltech One conference in 2019 Mark Lyons started a journey towards a future for his company and – more importantly – a journey which points towards an exciting future for the whole agricultural sector. “Do we want to live on a planet of peril or plenty?” This was the rhetorical question he asked then.
