Alltech IFM®: Think beyond the proximate analysis of feed
Feed costs represent the largest operating cost for most commercial dairy farmers. In order to maintain an optimum balance between feed costs and production, feed ingredients must be analyzed to formulate rations. However, feedstuffs vary widely in nutrient concentration due to location, harvest period, and other management practices. Nutritionists rely on nutritional models and chemical feed characteristics to formulate diets. Proximate analysis is used to determine nutrient concentration; however, this information is static and does not provide a complete evaluation of nutrient availability. True nutrient digestibility information is determined using digestion trials, but it is not practical to test in-vivo digestibility on all feeds.
Alltech IFM® is a dynamic diagnostic tool that that simulates rumen fermentation and evaluates the nutritive value of a total mixed ration (TMR), compound feed and/or fodder in terms of its digestibility and end-product formation. IFM helps nutritionists evaluate and troubleshoot dairy rations to maximize their feed efficiency and combat ever-rising feed costs.
From inception to implementation – Alltech IFM®: Redefining dairy nutrition
In February 2013, Alltech India established a ruminant laboratory fully equipped to provide analysis of in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) in samples of feed and fodder. Alltech has a strategic alliance with Karnataka Veterinary Animal & Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU), located in Bangalore, for research aimed at solving issues confronting the Indian dairy industry and providing cost-effective solutions.
Ten years of accomplishments in the IFM lab
Alltech remains committed to providing customized solutions and services to dairy farmers and feed millers. Through IFM, we are identifying barriers to rumen fermentation, formulating rations based on nutrient availability, and helping to reduce energy losses and feed wastage. With the help of Alltech IFM, dairy producers can take control of their rations and start maximizing them right away.
