The main objective of raising laying hens is to produce high quality, wholesome eggs.
Egg quality means different things to different people. Consumers want safe, healthy and affordable products, retailers want to display attractive or value-added products, and egg producers want to provide quality eggs profitably. Some markets face additional challenges in that it is not allowed to treat or wash eggs prior to dispatch. Egg shell strength is important for storage and product appearance since cracked eggs do not sell.
